What does "Mesh size" mean in gold nuggets?

Mesh size is a term often used by gold miners and gold dealers to indicate gold size. It refers to the mesh number (a US measurement standard) and its relationship to the size of the openings in the mesh screen (sieve), and thus the size of particles that can pass through these sieve openings. Figuring out the mesh number is simple. All you do is count the number of openings in one linear inch of screen. Classifier screens are available for sale in up to 12 different mesh openings.

We sell our natural gold nuggets in the following mesh sizes: 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14-16, 18 and smaller mesh is considered fine flour or flake gold. Prices vary by size. Rarity increases as gold sizes increase.

4 mesh is the largest nugget size we sell loose in bulk. These usually range form .50grams to 3 grams each. Larger nugget sizes can be special ordered, but will be priced as individual nuggets.

20 mesh for example, is about window screen size. We consider this size and smaller "fine gold". See image above for other sample sizes.
